My Own Experience with the Corporate Model

I was someone who wanted to forge my own path from a very young age.


From the age of thirteen I worked after school in my mother's clothing store. Later I worked in a delicatessen and a local fruit shop. I left home at sixteen and did not follow the traditional college path.


Instead I took entry level jobs including waitressing and reception work.


Despite what many would describe as a rocky start, those early experiences taught me something incredibly valuable. I enjoyed working with people and I developed strong communication skills.


Eventually I landed a position in sales.


By the age of twenty five I was earning a strong six figure income. I consistently exceeded my targets and was performing at the top of the sales team. From the outside it looked like the traditional career model was working perfectly.


Then everything changed.


New management came in and restructured the compensation plan. The commission component of our income was removed and overnight my salary was effectively cut in half.


That moment was a turning point for me.


It made me realize that even when you perform at a high level, your income can still be controlled by decisions made far above you in the organization.


That experience led me to make a life decision. I wanted to build something of my own.
